The Blue Flash Damsel from Fulling Mill is probably one of the genuinely 'Must Have' flies for fishing small stillwaters! This fly is designed to mimic a real damsel nymph with a marabou tail, blue tinsel and realistic movement that can be irresistible to fish. Fished slowly and deep near the weeds it can be very successful which explains its great popularity and regular appearance in the catch logs.

Q: Why is the Blue Flash Damsel so successful?

A: I think it's a combination of things that all come together to great success. There's the widespread availability and nuritional value in the natural damsel nymph, the natural olive colour of the materials in the imitation, the blue flash tinsel definitely helps as does the realistic movement of the marabou in the tail and the gold nugget head that gets the fly down in the water. Add in a swimming motion with a sink draw retrieve and the trigger effect of a slow stop start retrieve and you can understand why the blue flash damsel works so well.

Q: What's the best way to fish the blue flash damsel?

A: I find the blue flash damsel works best when fished deep rather than near the surface and with a long slow retrieve followed by a brief pause. This adds an attractive motion to the marabou tail and the stop / start can trigger a trout's reflex to grab something that's trying to escape. One of my favourite ways is to fish it on a medium sink line, cast out and count to 20 and then start the long slow retrieve. If you hit the weeds then reduce the sink time and don't be afraid to try different retrieve rates to see what works best for you.
